I take advantage of a small sunny clearing in a cloudy week for a moped ride, and a small pipe break by the river. An occasional excess has its place in life, and Pirate Kake is an excess. It's tones are not as deep as Old Ironsides or as complex and earthy as Penzance, but it's definitely a rich treat for the latakia lover. I was expecting it to be one dimensional, but while not complex, it's not boring either. Barely any sweetness in the blend, and if you do find it, it doesn't stay. While this tobacco is a little stout for my taste at this point, I did find t hat it has a great taste and aroma. Don't even bother attempting to cut this kake, you'll have to hammer the knife through. Another aspect that makes it great is the fact that when you pack a bowl, it does not have the tendenciy to spring back up. I smoke this one outdoors only as it is most offensive to pretty much everyone. I find the Ten Russians to be a slightly better balance than Stimulus Package. I guess this, is in part, due to solid balance with the orientals and burley. But it is a flawed treasure. It lights and stays lit easily, smokes dry and clean with no bite nor moisture. Its true what you all are saying! Burns well, and tastes great. I enjoyed the tobacco for what it's worth, but felt completely satiated for a while. Pirate Kake is indeed jam packed with this delightful Latakia, and it's apparent when you rub out some of this lovely cake. Tasting this one as it evolves and reveals more of itself has been very rewarding, especially for a latakiaphile like myself. Popped and greeted with the unmistakable aroma of a lot of Latakia. There's nothing wrong with this tobacco except for the overwhelming amount of latakia. Thick and creamy with a bit if a sweet perfume-esque flavor to it. I pack it somewhat loosly and it lights easily and burns nicely. Wonderful pressed cake is just right for the cellar and aging. Smoking a latakia blend we all know has that cherished, non mistakable fragrace in the air. There's something about the experience that's like drinking neat tea. I recommend a small bowl with a longish stem for best smoke. Final thoughts: if you get bored with all the medium strength english blends, and want something a little stronger tasting then pick some of this up and throw it in your rotation for the nights when you feel you just need something extra. And so I will begin with the tin note. Perfect moisture content out of the tin for breaking a piece off the cake and stuffing. Blackbeard at his best!!!!! I would never have purchased this by just reading the 75 % Latakia, but trying this in the sampler was a very nice surprise! The fact that you can purchase large quantities at bargain prices is also a plus and encourages big purchases for cellaring purposes. Update 01/19/06- One thing that wasn't put in my original review is that Pirate Kake is a wonderful DGT tobacco, in fact sometimes I think I prefer to smoke it after a few hours left in the pipe.
